ARC day 4: 24th November 2021
ARC day 4: 24th November 2021
I was woken up today by a bunch of quite horrible crashing sounds as though something was being thrown across a cupboard.
Turns out it was the mainsail, on third reef all night getting slapped from side to side by the following sea and wind. We kept surfing down waves and slewing around the sail got filled and then we steered back on course and it empties. This was with our twin headsails up. After a bit of uncertainty we took down the main and all seemed well. We had left it up in an effor to stabilise the roll for which two Headsails are famous but it turns out not to have beenmuchof a problem today.top windspeed has been about 18knots so things may be different in a few days when the winds pick up .
Just about 11 ish a super pod of dolphins showed up and jumped around off our bow. Must have been at least 40 of them. It was an amazing sight but my worries over the sail spoiled it for me a bit. - this was before we took it down.
Sailed along nicely all day after that sometimes making 7 or 8 knots. Our ARC position update showed there are still lots of other boats in range and we are not last!
Am hoping for a restful nightwatch. Kerrie is already in bed ( 1915hrs) and the kids are watching am episode of something on the tablet before bedtime.
